The Princess Diaries are classics

While there have been many book to movie adaptations, there are few that have had such a positive reaction years after their release like there has been with the princess diaries. While it can be argued which of the 2 movies released in the series are better, there is one thing that is undeniable- they are both fantastic. The plot line of the movie is entertaining without being obnoxious or dumb, the main character is a feminist icon who tells people that you don't need to be popular to be successful (1st movie) or that you don't need a husband to rule a country* (2nd movie), and Princess Mia is played by Anne Hathaway who is an Academy Award winner. Anyway, let's look at why the movies should be considered classics. 1. Julie Andrews is in them, and plays Queen Clarisse. She guides Anne Hathaway (whose name is kind of a Shakespeare reference might I add!) through her journey to take over as the crowned queen of Genovia, and even sings with Raven Simone in the second movie.
2. There are a lot of famous people in the series. Aside from Anne and Julie, Mandy Moore (This is Us), Chris Pine and Sandra Oh (from Grey's Anatomy) are also in the movies, along with a lot of other recognizable actors and actresses who are in small roles. 3. The movies have great life advice. In the first movie, Mia receives advice from her dad, who says, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than  fear. The brave may not live forever, but the cautious do not live at all." That is among the best advice I have ever heard come from a movie!! 4. The last thing that I think makes the movies great is that Mia never loses sight of who she is. As corny as that sounds, Mia keeps the same best friend in each of the movies, she never seeks revenge for the bullying she endures, and she still cares about her family, while she rules an entire country. Also, she has a cat named "Fat Louie", truly an amazing Queen.

* Yes I realize that this isn't a problem most people have, but it's an important message none the less
